Before You Get Your Concealed Carry Permit in Nebraska

Do I Have to Have a Concealed Carry Permit in Nebraska?

In Nebraska, open carry is legal without a permit. However, you must have a permit to concealed carry and to buy a firearm.

In order to be eligible to apply for a Nebraska concealed carry permit, you must be:

  • Be twenty-one or older
  • Have completed an accredited in-person or online firearm training course
  • Be a resident of Nebraska or be in the armed forces or a spouse of someone in the military
  • Be an American citizen
  • Not have been convicted of certain misdemeanors within the last ten years, including stalking, violation of an order of protection, sexual assault and public indecency.

Under the Concealed Carry Reciprocity legislation, Nebraska will recognize permits issued by those states which have standards equal to or greater than Nebraska. Steps to Acquire a Nebraska Concealed Carry Permit

Concealed weapons permits are processed at the state level by the Nebraska State Police.

  1. Complete a weapons safety and training course in person or online at a Nebraska-approved facility or website.
  2. Obtain a certificate of completion of the course.
  3. Download a Nebraska Handgun Permit application at https://statepatrol.nebraska.gov/sites/default/files/chpapplicationfillable.pdf or pick one up at your local Nebraska Highway Patrol office.  Check at https://chp-web.dps.Nebraska.gov/.
  4. Fill out the two-page application form
  5. Call to schedule an appointment (402) 471-4545).
  6. Present the application and necessary documentation in person to the nearest Nebraska State Patrol Headquarters https://statepatrol.nebraska.gov/services/concealed-handgun-permits
  7. Include the following documents with your application:
  • Completed, signed, and notarized application form
  • Certificate of successful completion of firearms training certificate
  • Current Nebraska driver’s license, military card, or Nebraska-issued photo ID.
  • Proof of citizenship (e.g., passport,  birth certificate, certificate of citizenship from immigration authorities, or a current or expired U.S. passport
  • Permit fee $50 in cash or check only

Non-Residents: Why choose online CCW training?

Nebraska residents cannot apply for the Virginia Non-resident Concealed Handgun Permit to qualify for their CCW training. Nebraska requires the course to be taught in person. Students must shoot demonstrate proficiency in safety and fundamentals of shooting.

However, as of August, 2019, Nebraska will accept Concealed Carry permits from states with criteria similar to theirs. Check to see if your state qualifies: https://statepatrol.nebraska.gov/services/concealed-handgun-permits/nebraska-reciprocity.

This option is for persons who are NOT residents of Nebraska. So, non-resident permit holders from the approved states can carry handguns concealed in Nebraska.

Taking CCW training online allows residents anywhere to obtain their CCW permit training from anywhere as long as they have access to a computer, a tablet, or a smartphone and a printer. This levels the playing field for those who live in remote areas of the state and get easily get to a training center.

Work and family schedules and responsibilities may make it impossible to attend a physical training center at the time courses are offered.

The time and travel costs may pose a financial burden to those who want to get a Nebraska CCW permit. Online training removes those costs.
